When the Training Kicks In...
Written by: Gayle G.
...Our training kicked in and my daughter and I turned back-to-back to defend ourselves. When it was all said and done, we had disarmed and disabled all three attackers.

Frequently Asked QuestionsHere are a few common questions we run into. If you don’t see your answer here, just contact us and we’ll be happy to answer it for you.
What ages can train?
We primarily teach adults, but we have students as young as 4 years old that have trained in this art. As a general rule of thumb, if the student is younger than 11 we ask a parent train with their child. Depending on the maturity of the student, we do make exceptions.
What kind of shape do I need to be in?
You don’t have to be in particularly good shape to train – that’s what the training is for. Sometimes new students will think they need to be fit to take class; we think you should take class to get fit. If there is anything you are not comfortable with doing, you’re not forced to do it. Our training is about finding what works for you.
Do I need to learn/understand Japanese?
Not at all. While understanding the language and culture does indeed help, it is not required to train. We do speak English alongside some Japanese, and you’re never required to learn the language – although it can be fun to learn the lingo. The techniques that you learn are what matters, not necessarily what they’re called.
Do you have beginner classes?
We’ve found that most students enjoy training with all different ranks - just like how classes are taught in Japan. It also helps students to learn more quickly since they have more experienced students to train with, and to guide them through the moves. For this reason, we train all ranks in the same class.
Do you offer Self Defense only classes?
It’s common for martial arts schools to offer a self defense only class. However, since our art is entirely focused on self defense, we teach self defense through our martial arts class. If we don’t feel it’s effective for self defense, we won’t teach it. Our rule is if we’re going to teach it, it has to be effective for everyone – men, women, younger, older, etc.
Do you offer Private Lessons/Off-site Seminars?
Yes we do! If you would like to arrange a private lesson for yourself, or to organize a Self Defense seminar for your organization, just contact us and we’ll be happy to assist you.
